Bing Index
The Bing Index is the search index maintained by Microsoft that powers not just Bing search results but also Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT Browse, and Meta AI’s web retrieval. As of 2026, over 87% of ChatGPT’s web citations match Bing’s top organic search results, making Bing indexing a prerequisite for visibility across three of the six major AI platforms. If your content is not in the Bing Index, it cannot be cited by Copilot, ChatGPT, or Meta AI.
Which AI Platforms Depend on Bing
- Microsoft Copilot. Embedded across Windows, Edge, Outlook, Teams, and Microsoft 365. Uses Bing’s index directly for all web retrieval. Bing rank directly determines Copilot citation probability.
- ChatGPT Browse. When ChatGPT Browse is enabled, it queries Bing’s index for live web results. OpenAI also operates its own crawler (OAI-SearchBot) that works alongside Bing to augment search results. Strong Bing SEO performance translates directly to ChatGPT citations.
- Meta AI. Currently uses both Google and Bing for web retrieval across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Content indexed in Bing has citation opportunity across Meta’s 1 billion monthly active AI users.
Optimizing for the Bing Index
- Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools. Submit your sitemap and verify domain ownership. Check the AI Performance report (added February 2026) to see how often your content appears in AI-generated answers.
- Use IndexNow. The IndexNow protocol lets you notify Bing immediately when content is published or updated, bypassing the normal crawl wait time. This speeds up inclusion in AI responses.
- Allow Bingbot in robots.txt. Blocking Bingbot blocks you from Copilot, ChatGPT Browse, and Meta AI simultaneously. It is the single most impactful crawl permission for GEO.
- Bing ranks differently than Google. Bing weights social signals, exact-match domains, and multimedia content more heavily than Google does. Content ranking on page 2 in Google may rank on page 1 in Bing, and vice versa. Check your Bing rankings separately.
