Citation Frequency
Citation frequency is the rate at which a brand or URL appears in AI-generated responses across multiple queries and sessions. It is the primary GEO performance metric, replacing traditional SEO’s keyword ranking position. Unlike rankings (which are deterministic), citation frequency is probabilistic: the same query may cite your brand 7 out of 10 times, 3 out of 10 times, or not at all, depending on model state and competing content.
How to Track Citation Frequency
Measure citation frequency by running target queries repeatedly across AI platforms and recording the percentage of responses that mention your brand. Use convergence-based sampling to ensure statistical reliability. Track frequency per query, per platform, and over time to identify trends. A declining citation frequency for a previously strong query indicates new competing content or a model update that changed source preferences. Citation frequency combined with Share of Voice provides a complete picture of AI visibility.
