E-E-A-T

E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) is Google’s quality framework that has expanded from traditional search ranking into AI citation scoring. AI systems use E-E-A-T signals to determine which sources are credible enough to cite in generated responses. In GEO, E-E-A-T is not a checklist but a composite signal derived from author credentials, domain authority, third-party validation, and content depth across the federated namespace.

How AI Systems Evaluate E-E-A-T

AI retrieval systems assess E-E-A-T through observable signals rather than explicit scores:

  • Experience: First-person accounts, case studies with specific metrics, and original data signal real-world experience. AI systems can distinguish between content that describes a topic and content written by someone who has done the thing.
  • Expertise: Author pages with credentials, LinkedIn profiles linking to published content, and consistent topical focus across publications signal domain expertise. Schema markup (Person, author attributes) makes these signals machine-readable.
  • Authoritativeness: Backlink profiles, citation by other authoritative sources, and presence in structured knowledge bases (Wikipedia, Crunchbase) signal authority. In GEO, authority also comes from being cited by other AI responses, creating a compounding effect.
  • Trustworthiness: HTTPS, clear contact information, privacy policies, and absence of deceptive practices. Review platform ratings and third-party validation contribute to trust signals that AI systems factor into citation decisions.

E-E-A-T in GEO vs Traditional SEO

In traditional SEO, E-E-A-T influences page ranking. In GEO, E-E-A-T influences whether a passage is selected for citation from among competing passages on the same topic. A passage from a high-E-E-A-T source may be preferred over an equally relevant passage from a lower-authority source, even if the lower-authority source has better keyword targeting. This makes E-E-A-T investment one of the few GEO strategies that compounds over time rather than requiring constant refresh.
